Goal Realiser - 1st Step

The ‘Goal Realiser – 1st step’ is a tool that encourages you to look at your progress at a deeper level, and see how this has strengthened your foundation. Often, we are so focused on achieving goals that we don’t stop to reflect along the way. Reviewing what has contributed to our success, and considering lessons learned can accelerate our future progress.

An important step in realising any goal is to be truly aware of the progress you’ve made, and the challenges and opportunities that have supported your progress.

Despite being called a ‘Goal Realiser’ this tool is just as useful in understanding your progress in working towards a ‘project’ or ‘focus’ as it is towards a ‘goal’. In a business context, the Goal Realiser can be used to understand the progress that has been made on a long-term goal, such as creating different revenue streams, or a short-term goal, such as completing a project. In a personal sense, this tool might help you have a deeper understanding of your progress in organising a charity event.

All too often, we tend to get caught up in the ‘achievements’ and ‘milestones’ we make on the path to completing our goal. While it’s exciting to have a tangible sense of our accomplishments, if our standards are too high and we are fixated on these markers, it can lead to a sense of despondency when we feel we don’t have sufficient accomplishments to show our progress. The Goal Realiser helps us take a broader view of our progress. It assists us to appreciate our achievements, as well putting things into perspective by considering the challenges we’ve overcome and/or the opportunities we’ve created along the way.

How to use it

  1. Goal – Start by writing your goal in the first box provided. (Note: Each line is dedicated to helping you understand an individual goal). If you’re not sure whether to pursue a specific goal, we have a ‘Goal Evaluator’ tool that might inspire.

  2. Progress – Consider the progress you’ve made towards realising your goal. This may be any tangible achievements, such as reaching your first fundraising milestone, or more intangible progress, such as creating time and headspace to onboard new employees.

  3. Challenges – Reflect on challenges you’ve faced on the path to realising your goals. How have you overcome them? In a personal context, this may be no accommodation available where you want to holiday. In a business sense, these challenges may someone losing a big client.

  4. Opportunities – Identify opportunities that may be presented to you by the situation. What steps have you already taken? How have these influenced your progress in realising your goal? What potential opportunities might you have gained from the challenges you’ve faced? Also consider future opportunities, and how these may contribute to your progress in realising your goal.
